Department of Homeland Security has a dedicated group of people volunteering in schools around DC to inspire underserved kids pursue STEM careers. Once a week for two months, as an afterschool program, they worked with these kids bringing science content and activities to their classroom. This was the last meeting to which I was invited to talk about the Curiosity Mars rover and have them practice the engineering design process by building rover prototypes. These fifth graders were terrific; it was a refreshing experience.
